Christmas time, misletoe & wine

What a shit title! All inspiration (and Christmas song lyrics) have disappeared from my head! Anyway, moving on.

There's been a lot of Christmassy posts popping up on Blogger recently and I've loved each and every one of them and now it's my turn to join in the fun! As most of you probably know, I'm all for getting into the Christmas spirit early and listening to seasonal songs in November is more than acceptable in my eyes. Most people join in the fun as soon as December arrives, what with putting up decorations, visiting markets in cities across the country and opening new doors on advent calendars each morning. But what about personal Christmas traditions? What happens on Christmas day in your house? I love hearing about the different things everybody does. I honestly used to believe that everybody's day happened in exactly the way mine does. Oh, how naive I was! So go on, you tell me yours after I've told you mine...

Even now, at 20-years-old, I still never manage to stay in bed past around 7:30am, I've got absolutely no idea why because I don't ever feel as excited as I used to, and never will I wake up that early on any other day of the year unless I really, really have to! We then all go downstairs, see if Santa has been (honestly!) and he usually has, which is always a good start to the day! Mum and Dad make themselves a coffee while me and my sister wait for our grandparents to arrive. We absolutely have to wait for their arrival before any sort of present opening can begin. Possibly the longest wait in the world!

Mid-morning, the rest of the family begin to arrive and the smell bacon sandwiches replaces the smell of the turkey cooking (which has been in the oven since about 6am) so we all tuck into those while we wait for various other family members to get here. Not much happens between then and when Christmas dinner is ready, us 'children' (I'm the youngest out of my sister & three cousins but we're still referred to as this!) sit around, watch some rubbishy Christmas telly while the 'adults' prepare mountains of vegetables, make labels for each flavour of stuffing and set the table.

After dinner, the pots and pans are washed up and put away before another present session can commence. The adults always, always, always draw out the wait for the second round and every year we get more and more impatient. It's ridiculous, it really is, but it's definitely all part of the fun! After this we all chill out together, the games are cracked out - usually Uno - and we have a few hours of playing, it's always so funny and we always end up in fits of laughter mid-game for various reasons. I love this time of day best because it's not very often we all get together as a family these days, my sister lives in Leeds, I live in Leicester for the majority of the year, one of my cousins lives in Derby and the others live near Lincoln so we're dotted about all over the place which is unfortunate but that's the way life goes.

Reading this back, it doesn't sound like much happens but the 25th December is always, always, always one of the happiest and best days for me and it really does epitomise everything I adore about the countdown I insist on doing every single year.

So go on, now it's your turn to tell me what happens in your house! I'm excited to hear what everyone has to say, don't let me down now ;)

  1. Your Christmas Day sounds lovely! I always love spending Christmas with my family.
Haha, me and my brothers and our cousins still get called 'children', and we're all in our mid twenties and early thirties! It's funny isn't it? I'm actually the youngest in my whole family [barring second cousins etc].
Usually my Christmas Day is just spent with my immediate family [although sometimes one of my brothers isn't there as he may spend it with his girlfried's family], although often my Grandparents come round. I spend the day at home with them then might go to Ben's in the evening. We'll spend a day with the whole family, plus perhaps my boyfriend and my brothers' girlfriends on boxing day, although this year it's the Tuesday after as my uncle's working christmas day AND boxing day! Unlucky him!
We have a tradition of a table present - something that my mum puts at our places before we go to eat, which we can open between our main meal and pudding! And we always do a family quiz, which is organized by either my dad or my uncle.
I'm sure there are other traditions, but I think I've waffled on enough!
Oooh I'm feeling all festive now - thanks Lucy!

  2. I love the sound of your Christmas Day and the fact that everyone has different little traditions. :)

We get up really early aswell and open our presents with a glass of Bucks Fizz, have a bath with another glass of Bucks Fizz and get all dressed up. There's usually an hour of so of time to play around with our presents whilst phone calls to distant relatives are made and then we go down the street to my auntie's house to meet the rest of the family for more presents. The adults all work on cooking dinner (at 21 I'm still classed as a 'kid' too at Christmas, haha!) and we usually sit down and eat at about 3-4pm. Afterwards we're entertained with the little ones who usually all go upstairs and make some sort of christmas concert for us and then we settle down with drinks and play some games.

I'm so excited for it now! :)

  3. That sounds amazing!

Basically as my mum and dad are divorced I have to go 2 places on Christmas day. Usually I wake up, dead early like you, open presents at my mums, then my dad comes and takes us to my grandmas for an hour while we open more presents!

Back at my mum, we host the Christmas dinner and grandparents and cousins all come to us. We spend the rest of the day chilling out, playing games and chatting about nothing!

    I love it!

  4. Aww you've made me feel all Christmassy and even more excited for the big day!

My day usually goes like this. I always, like you, without fail get up before the 7.30am marker. I still get SO excited about Christmas the night before and can never get to sleep, even though I'm 20. I usually rush into my parent's room and declare it's Christmas (although last year I woke my sister and her boyfriend up, they weren't happy!) and insist that present opening commences. I have to wait for everyone to be down until we begin! Last year everyone waited around and we decided to get dressed before opening them. Me and my sister always get dressed up on Christmas day; a pretty dress and glitzy make up is usually involved. Then we open the presents! We all take turns, with usually my sister and I choosing a present each and opening them at the same time. Gradually the presents start to thin out, and mum and dad start opening theirs. We then have a morning of looking at presents, eating chocolate (as we're bound to have received vast quantities of it) and waiting for everyone to arrive for Christmas dinner. After lots of yummy food and pulling of crackers we tend to have a lazy afternoon of playing with our new goodies and watching xmas tv. Usually we'll go to my elder sister's house to see my niece as she shares her birthday with Christmas day, and see what goodies she's collected. After that it's usually a lazy night in front of the fire watching xmas specials and eating lots of food! xx

  5. Your Christmas Day sounds lovely! :)

Our Christmas is a little bit different, because it's my birthday! So, like you, we normally get up around 7:30 (and it's actually normally because we've been woken up by my Dad bringing us a cup of tea!) then my sister and I go downstairs, get our Christmas Stockings and go sit on my parents' bed and open them.

We have croissants and bucks fizz for breakfast, then go get showered, dressed etc. Mum starts cooking dinner.. traditional Christmas dinner, but with a nut roast for me cos I'm vegetarian. Between 10 and 11 we "regroup" in the living room where I open my birthday presents.

After dinner we load the diswasher etc, drink tea, chill out a bit, then we exchange Christmas presents!

Once the present swapping has stopped, we play games, watch Christmas films, and things like the Dr Who Christmas special. We'll sometimes go to my Dad's parents' or they'll come to us, but not always. This year my Granny is staying at my parents' for a few days so she can spend Christmas with us :)

  8. That sounds like such a nice Christmas! I love how you still retain the Christmas spirit!

I find now that as I've grown out the excitement of Santa etc Christmas has never again had that magical feel to it.

I also get up super early and then have to get into a mad rush to get ready for Christmas lunch as usually I'm still lounging in PJ's!

The thing I love most though is being with family, the whole festive month of december and the feeling you get when you have made someone happy by buying them the perfect gift! Xxx
