EDIT 8/7: I have just emailed the CEO for the third time after all my emails have been ignored again, my last email was sent on June 27th & the one before than on June 20th - no response from either. Not only are they insulting me further but they're also making themselves look ridiculous. Believe me when I say that I really don't want to drag this out any more than it already has been, but it's come to far for me to just let it drop and for Glossybox to get away with yet more dreadful customer service.
EDIT: I posted an update on this situation that you can see by clicking here. In short, the CEO of Glossybox got in touch with me and said they have reviewed their policies and are now going to pay their intern a weekly stipend but there was no mention of what was said about me and I am yet to receive any form of apology off them.
A bit of an off-topic post from me, something that I have been debating posting because I hoped everything would be cleared up with a simple apology but apparently that's too much to ask. Another thing that prompted me to blog this was the negativity that I've seen over the last couple of days regarding the approach to customer service as well as a few other things. I'm not usually one to cause, or even be involved in drama so bare with me but at least by posting this on my own blog, nothing can be deleted if it gets a little bit too difficult for Glossybox to deal with.

If you follow me on Twitter you might be aware of what happened last week between myself and Glossybox. They advertised an internship that had to be undertaken for a minimum of three months, expenses only. Working full time for three months on pretty much nothing is not only illegal, but surely it also violates any sort of human right or general conscience, no? Well, apparently not. I tweeted Glossybox and raised my concerns last Tuesday evening and I received no response. The next day I followed up my previous tweets and I got a patronising, generic response stating that 'CVs take a while to go through but we'll be in touch if you're right for the job'. Fantastic. Not only did I not even apply for the job in the first place, but they obviously don't bother to read their Twitter feed; I quickly replied asking if they really thought I wanted to work illegally for them and did they know that, by law, you can only work for free for a maximum of four weeks. Surprise surprise, nothing back. I then pointed them in the direction of this link, and again asked if they knew what they were advertising was illegal - another patronising response was thrown my way: 'don't worry - everything goes through our legal department' ummm...? I decided to leave it for the time being a d thought I'd pursue my efforts the next day.
That evening, I found out that the person behind the social media for Glossybox is a "popular" and "well known" blogger. I was casually reading through their tweets and found one from earlier that day, posted around the time that I was tweeting the Glossybox account. It read: 'doing internships was the best thing I ever did + is the reason I don't work at McDonald's + is the reason I have a good marketing job' - oh, so not only is that obviously aimed towards me, it is wholly unprofessional, entirely unnecessary and definitely uncalled for. Not only have I never spoken to this person in my life, but she also knows nothing about me and has obviously made it quite clear how she feels about my life, so much so that apparently its okay to degrade, insult and belittle me, based on my place of employment.
I was so angry when I read the tweet that I didn't hesitate to respond: 'was there any need for your bitchy comment? I raise valid points and what, working at McDonald's makes me less of a person? I've done internships, I've worked for free, it doesn't make it right though and some of us aren't fortunate enough to live close enough to London to scrape by on expenses. What Glossybox is offering IS illegal and it's not okay, nor is you having cheap digs at me on your personal account, not very professional" annnnd guess what? I got absolutely no response.
Had I got a simple apology I probably would have dropped this whole thing but because I didn't, I took it further. Last Thursday I lodged an official complaint to Glossybox about their response to my innocent questions, and also about the way their employees choose to act on their personal accounts. I got one email back thanking me for my 'query' and informing me that my email had been forward to the relevant person. That was followed by another email, from the same person, asking for my telephone number and a convenient time to call; I told them I'd rather keep all correspondence to email and I'm still waiting to hear back, this was last Friday.
I'm not sure about anybody else but I think this whole situation has got way out of hand, through no fault of my own, but through a complete lack of professionalism shown by both the brand and their employees. Surely dealing with customer complaints should be top priority? No? Again, an apology would have sufficed but clearly that's too much to ask. What was said about me has made me nothing but angry, what right does this person think she has to comment on my life? Like I said, I told her that I'd done internships - and believe me, I've worked my absolute arse off for free - and I know that one day it'll all pay off, but for now, McDonald's will have to do. What if I wanted to work there forever though? What if I did want to make a career for myself and work up, would that still make me less of a person? At least I have an actual job, it might not be what I want to do but at least it's something, and in this climate something is most definitely better than nothing.
The Glossybox customer service is no better either, it's absolutely appalling and I don't think anything is going to change that, they simply don't care about the people that keep them in business. All the 'advertising' they recieve is pretty much done through blogs where their boxes are 'gifted', so why should they care about anyone but themselves and their 'ambassadors'? It really is an appalling company with appalling morals.
Imagine if Glossybox spent less money on their 'ambassadors' and used everything they saved to pay some poor person's wages, just IMAGINE.
I consider myself super lucky to have managed to get a paid internship at a wonderful place, but know after being offered an unpaid role at a rival company, I know it still goes on. Good on you Lucy for taking a stand.
ReplyDeleteFor me, working in the position I do right now, I recommend that that there company needs to outsource their social media and customer services, stat! Or at least invest in EConsultancy courses and wages for their staff!!
That's just appalling.
ReplyDeleteI can totally understand the point of having ambassadors in the first 6 months of the business, get the name out there sort of thing! But now that everyone and their mum blogs about the boxes surely they can knock the ambassadors on the head seeing as they're getting plenty of free advertising from other bloggers.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad I unsubscribed from glossy box now, this whole thing is awful! Staff members definitely shouldn't be using their personal accounts to comment on work issues either, especially not when it involves Insulting a customer. Shocking! Let us all know what happens from here. x
ReplyDeleteI supported you with this on twitter at the time, and I still think you are so right. If people have concerns, they should be responded to effectively. I think a good example has been Urban Decay with regards to selling in China- dedicated responses and actually addressing people's concerns. I also follow that blogger and was surprised by that statement. I often think that most people who talk of internships do not realise how much of a luxury they are. In all areas, internships require financial support- not all of us have families that are able to do that for us, no matter how important an internship may be for our careers. If you don't have the finances to back the costs of living and transport, not to mention the luxuries of socialising with your coworkers etc, then internships are not a possibility. More people should accept that being able to undertake an internship means you are in a fairly privelaged situation , and I think more firms should be paying properly in order to stop it being so elitist. Damn right Lucy, that you should have pride in working your job, doing it well and continuing to focus on where you want to go. Not all of us can take the quick routes.
ReplyDeletexxx
I totally agree with you that it's exploitation and ridiculous, but unfortunately it's not illegal. There's a grey area around internships that aren't covered by the government's employment laws and most companies in beauty & fashion exploit that because the supply of labour (people that wanna work in that industry) is great.
ReplyDeleteSorry you had issues with this blogger - I think I know who you are on about. Or GlossyBox have employed a new, equally incapable blogger to do their customer service. When I told the customer service / twitter person (which was a big blogger) last year that I thought the GlossyBox customer service was shite, this person got really defensive rather than taking the feedback onboard and using it constructively.
Unpaid internships ARE illegal, breaking the laws surrounding national minimum wage. You are right that they exploit people desperate for a job in such industries, but that doesn't make it legal.
DeleteI actually referred the bloggers tweet add I agree with what she said. Unfortunately in this business experience is everything and I took a 9 month internship on less than minimum wage. the laws are very woolley about internships and nothing is defined clearly, therefore they were not acting illegally. It might have been difficult but taking an internship was one of the best decisions of my life and the reason I now have a great job that's well paid. The blogger did act wrongly however and should face some comeback from her employer.
ReplyDeleteRegardless of whether or not they were acting illegally, what was said about me and my place of employment was completely unnecessary and more than irrelevant.
DeleteLike I said, I've done internships myself so I know what it's like, and like I also said, I have never spoken to the person in question before so I don't understand why she thinks it's okay to assume that the reason I don't have a "good job" is because I haven't worked for free enough. The fact that I personally have been insulted on a public forum by an employee and nothing has yet happened because of it is the point I am trying to get across.
Thank you for your comment though x
Zara - I think you are missing a huge point here. Lucy isn't arguing that internships are valuable. In fact she has stated she knows how valuable, and how much hard work, they are.
DeleteThe comment made about her current job, was out of order. It was a comment implying that McDonalds is not a good job to have and that the job she has at Glossybox, is above Lucy's choices. That, is what is out of order, out of line and you cannot deny on any level that the comment was anything but arrogant, uneducated and belittling xo
@Zara - You are totally missing the point here. As Tattooed TeaLady said, Lucy has never once said that internships aren't valuable. Just the way in which they are handled is completely inappropriate.
DeleteWow I am really appalled at this! And her comments have made me so angry because I am in exactly the same boat as you - a PR graduate but I cannot afford to do internships and work for free - especially when living 2hrs30 outside of London!!!!
ReplyDeleteThat's awful! I saw this person's tweet last week and wondered what it was about and now I know. Never been a fan of glossy box in the first place nor will my estimation of them go up after reading about their "customer service" xxx
ReplyDeleteHi Lucy,
ReplyDeleteI am still utterly shocked and appalled by this. I just don't understand how the comment was even justified. It has really changed my opinion of the person, and put me off of not only Glossybox (even more than I already was put off) and this person's blog, YouTube, etc. Yes, we are all entitled to a personal Twitter. We are all entitled to say what we think. But in this case, a tweet which has caused such offence and upset, stirred anger, not only in yourself, was very poorly thought out. If you have a personal Twitter but also take control of a professional Twitter, you should be more careful.
The thing that irks me the most is the utter arrogance of what was said. So what if you work in McDonalds? You have a job. I don't. And as you said, any job is better than none in this climate. I just find myself so baffled by the comment, so let down by such an established blogger whom others take lead from, for coming across so poorly. xo
Hit the nail on the head! x
DeleteJust because somebody is a well known blogger does not give them the right to judge your employment, this has riled me!! It's so unfair how bloggers are so judgmental of one another, it happens constantly, and it is so wrong. It doesn't give off the right impression at all. And as for unprofessional - completely agree.
ReplyDeleteYou just have to scroll through the Glossybox Facebook wall to see a backlash from customers who are unhappy...and have been ignored by Glossybox. It was recently revealed the 'beauty profiles' which were introduced a year ago havnt even been used...that is very misleading as for a year people thought they were being used. all along Even I received feedback stating that 'products are tailored where possible', well there's a lie if ever I saw one!
It's such a shame because the idea at the start was fantastic, but unfortunately little effort seems to be put into customer services and sourcing quality products. The competition in the beauty box market is tough, I don't know why Glossybox haven't upped their game personally. It just seems like they can't be bothered.
I think that's absolutely appauling. GlossyBox really didn't impress me with their boxes and now their way of dealing with things has proven what an awful, ill-thought out business it is. I study Business A Level and HR and how you treat your customers is one of the things I have learnt, and to be quite frank, the Managers of GlossyBox should almost definitely go back to College and learn a few things themselves.
ReplyDeleteI feel sorry for you that you got so much stick for something you didn't do. They'll hopefully lose a lot of followings from this!
I was actually really considering subscribing for a GlossyBox but thank you so much for creating this post and swaying me. I really cannot believe how shocking their customer service and professionalism is. It is so unfair that this person judged you, when they have no right. Fab post, well done for coming out and telling the truth about these boxes! So pleased that someone is actually honest about GlossyBox.
ReplyDeletewww.mybeautyandfashionfix.blogspot.com
I dont know much about internships but whether them not being paid is illegal, that comment was still quite clearly personal, unnecessary and really unprofessional! Everyones allowed an opinion but why did it need to be so public and bitchy when surely they would have known you'd end up seeing it. My opinion of that company and blogger has definitely gone down massively now.
ReplyDeletexx
I think it's horrible how everyone always puts down McDonald's as a lesser place to work.
ReplyDeleteI worked for the company(McDoanalds) for 5 years to get myself through collage, then was given the chance to move abroad and work for the company. Which of course I took. If I hadn't worked for McDonald's I would never of had the opportunity to move abroad and be in the great job I have now(not McDonalds).
I am not ashamed I worked there, as a billion dollar company they have some of the highest work ethics and practices around. My hard working attitude comes from working there and lot of employers are also aware of this and don't look at it as a negative.
I saw your tweets about this but didn't know the full story. I was also considering subscribing to Glossybox but definitely been put off by the obvious lack of consideration that they have for their customers and the arrogant, snotty attitude of their staff. I hate people who judge others based on their job/salary and i really hope that this 'popular' blogger received a right royal bollocking from her employers. You'd think that someone who worked within social media would know better.
ReplyDeleteI think it's great that you've posted this, people should know the truth about companies like this and it's nice to see someone being honest for a change! xx
I have never subscribed to Glossy Box and I am so glad! Similarly to you, I work in a local supermarket rather than busting myself trying to do internships like a lot of my friends at uni do, so I understand that there is a lack of respect for people working minimum wage but to get that from a company is ridiculous - especially from someone who supposedly works in social media and understand how quickly bad customer service can spread within the blogging world.
ReplyDeleteAnd whether or not these things are illegal, if you think about how much money Glossy Box have from every person subscribing, they have enough money to pay someone, even if it is only minimum wage! I crippled myself for a semester by doing an unpaid internship, and had to live on basic food for a month because I couldn't afford to get the train otherwise!
Anyway, I'm very glad you spoke up about this post! I know exactly the blogger you're talking about it and it's very easy to keep quiet in these kind of situations, thanks for letting us all know!
xx
Hi Lucy!
ReplyDeleteI can't believe what I just read. I was thinking about subscribing to Glossy Box again but after reading this, it just leaves a sour taste in the mouth. I'm very much surprised that:
1) They gave a generic response to your tweet especially when they didn't bother to read what you wrote and on more than one occasion. If a brand is going to use social media, they need to use it properly otherwise don't bother at all. EPIC FAIL!
2) The person who tweeted (not to mention any names but we all know who it is...) is such a disgrace using her personal twitter to write something so despicable. Who does she think she is judging people like that and somebody that she doesn't even know!!! GAH! Just because she's an established blogger and has a job doesn't make her bigger or above anybody else. She needs to get off her high horse, if she's as great as she thinks/says she is, she wouldn't have had to do internships to get to where she is. Just saying.
I totally understand that you're angry as we all are for you, but you know what? I bet they're/she's worried (possibly shaking in their boots) about the whole situation as Glossy Box have been extremely unprofessional about this whole situation and particular the employee in question causing this backlash! I hope her manager is having stern words with her and people take her down from that pedestal of hers.
Hope you're ok hun!
Tx

The comments you got were awful, just complete snobbery and there is no excuse for that! People are entitled to personal twitters, but it is when it is as well known that you work for a company you do need to have some tact.
ReplyDeleteYes internships are valuable, The problem is, so many business have caught on to the idea of internships now, and the fact that if they slap the word 'intern' on what it essentially a full time job, they can get away with not paying. But not all of us can do this, and I applaud you for working in a role you may not want to pursue forever in order to support yourself (and if you did want to work your way up there, more power to you)
I have just spent the last year in a paid internship, and barely scraped by. I live in London and am completely self-sufficient, and now am hunting for another job but all the ones in the business' I wish to get into start with an unpaid internship which is just not possible, so I am taking a job in a different industry...this does not make me less of a person or less dedicated. It is just the sacrifices we have to make in order to survive these days...and the snobbery that appears to come with 'success' kind of sickens me...
xxx
Wow, I have read so many terrible things about Glossy box these past few days but this really tops the lot! I cannot believe Glossy Box would ever associate themselves with someone who is acting totally unprofessional (actually I can believe it from recent tweets about glossybox and how bad their customer service is). I actually have so much respect for bloggers who work to get to by, no matter where you work. Working is something to be proud of and teaches the value of money be it retail, marketing or mcdonalds and that is a valuable trait to have, not something to be mocked. I am so shocked she was even stupid enough to put something like that on her twitter!
ReplyDeleteJust seen the tweet on 'naming no names' feed. Can't believe it, totally uncalled for. We are behind you! xXx
ReplyDeleteI was lucky enough that I was able to work at ASDA alongside my internship which meant that I was able to get the marketing experience I needed to get into a job in marketing BUT the snobbery I received was ridiculous. As we have talked about before, working hard to get to your goals is an admirable thing and NO-ONE has the right to put you down. I was lucky that I was compensated with other things (rather than money) for my internship (it was a charity and I worked there 2 days a week) but I hate this culture of working for free and I think companies should pay people.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that someone working for GB was so unprofessional and the way they have handled this means that they don't care about people (their customers!)so they will get their just desserts in the end!
A very jumbled comment but I totally agree with everything you say!
Maria xxx
Am I the only one who doesn't know who the big blogger is? XD
ReplyDeleteI can't believe they'd personally attack someone in an indirect way, personal account or not! >.< Everyone else has pretty much said what I think already!
Definitely don't want a GlossyBox! I know that much!
its lily pebbles lost all respect for her now so uncalled for and unprofessional, like many big bloggers they become 'popular' and it all goes to their heads and they think they are better than everyone else! im unfollowing her right now x
DeleteI think it's quite ridiculous how badly you were treated by Glossybox when you were simply asing them a polite question. It is also totally unfair how this 'popular' blogger belittled you for where you work. It's alright for some people who maybe live in London and are financially able to do internships, but not everyone is so lucky!
ReplyDeleteCertainly won't be subscribing to Glossybox anytime soon that's for sure.
-x-
It's disgusting! I know you have done internships, and glamourous ones too! It's not fair her judging you just because she has a job. Well maybe after this story she won't get any. The word goes round in the indusrry...
ReplyDeleteGlossybox has had pretty shitty PR stunts since the beginning... Last years, comments were deleted from their Facebox page, and people were also banned. I know because I am one myself! If you want to read about it: http://msbubuandhergirlyness.blogspot.ca/2011/06/glossybox-again.html
Hopefully they will make public apologies, but I don't really think they will, as they never did :(
I know which ambassador you are referring to and I find her comments absolutely disgusting. Even if she was not representing the brand, voicing that opinion to so many on Twitter is downright disrespectful.
ReplyDeleteHaving any job just now is an achievement and working in some marketing company does NOT make someone any better than anyone else. I had already unsubbed from Glossybox but if I hadn't then I would after reading this.
The way you've been treated, and in particular the comments on twitter, is disgusting. You should be proud of yourself for actually having the work ethic to go out and work, even if it is in a job that you don't want to be doing forever. It would be easy for you to sit at home and claim Job Seekers, but you're not. Hopefully future employers will look at your CV and see that you obviously aren't afraid to work hard and pay your way. The way I see it, all jobs give you transferable skills (dealing with people etc) that will help you in whatever career path you take.
ReplyDeleteAnd, seriously, what is the point of beauty boxes? £12 a month for some random samples that you'll either hate, or love and not be able to afford anyway! I don't get it...
xx
god that sounds awful. ive had troubles with glossybox in the past, and in the end i got fed up of it and simply unsubscribed. i never really complain to companies, so i thought that maybe it was normal - however i once had a slight problem with she said beauty (whose beauty boxes are fr superior anyway) and their customer service was delightful! ok, maybe exaggerating, but still at least they were quick to respond and polite.
ReplyDeleteand i seem to be the only person to not know who this "well known" blogger is! really intrigued to know who they are!
DeleteI'd really like to know who this blogger is, so I can know not to support their blog out of principle...this is absolutely disgraceful treatment. I'm very sure that one day you'll have a better paid, more enjoyable job whilst she's still sat with her freebies behind her laptop - purely because you're a better person! Karma's a bitch! xx
ReplyDeleteThis is an awful way to treat people, I'm sorry you went through it. I have recently cancelled my subscription to glossybox and i am so glad, for many reasons, that i did. I just googled 'glossybox social media' and found the bitchy tweeter and will now be avoiding her blog and youtube channel.
ReplyDeleteDisgusting behaviour. I really hate Glossybox and everything they do, from ignoring their customers to sending out measly samples whilst their ambassadors get the full works. Shocking company, hopefully it won't survive for much longer.
ReplyDeleteMarie x
i saw her original tweet and did wonder what she was going on about considering the mention of mcdonalds was so specific. its horrid that she decided to target you personally. the way she treated you is absolutely disgusting & her comments have definitely put me off her as a blogger (not that i found her blog to be particularly interesting in the first place!). unpaid internships are so unfair on the vast majority of people. i don't know how any company can expect people to work for free when theres bills to paid. thats one of the reasons i'm unemployed, i need to do some more internships to get enough graphic design experience for a paid job but then i'd have to shell out £200 a week on childcare with nothing in return. glossybox are just taking the piss. glad i unsubscribed from them last month, i'd had enough of crappy shower gels anyway xx
ReplyDeletehere here! whether it is illegal or not to not pay an intern, is a) morally disgusting b)gives you a severe indicator to what kind of company you could potentially be working for in the future. i throughly agree with everything you have said, it not only angers me but saddens me to see the how you were treated/bullied over a social networking site. i'm glad that you have written this post, because if Glossy Box do not learn from this mistake and act on it - their strategy as a business is not only flawed but doomed for failure.
ReplyDeletegive it 6 months to a year and they'll go bust, trust me.
Even if the company doesn't apologise for said bloggers actions she definitely should! By the company and her ignoring you just goes to show what becoming "blogger famous" does to people. Also by not apologising and trying to brush it under the carpet they are showing they know they are in the wrong which they are.
ReplyDeleteXx
From what I recall, this is NOT the first time that the Glossybox's social media feeds via Twitter have come in to question, in this exact same manner.
ReplyDeleteAnother "big blogger" who happens to be a glossybox ambassador and I have an inkling she works for glossybox too has put her two cents in with a slight dig at you too. Don't see why they don't just say it to you rather than about you!? Blogging is very bitchy as of late I've noticed
ReplyDeleteLucy I'm just catching up on this and I have to say good on you! There's not many who would stand up for what they believe in to a big brand. Personally it angers me that interns don't get paid, I've even seen some that only cover London zones 1-6 travel and when you live a hour and a half away it's not really something you can do. I'm starting to realise that now I've finished university my dream job may stay as a dream because I know that you need to gain experience and the only way to do that is through interning. I have a flat to pay for and even if I moved back home (which is not going to happen) my parents couldn't financially support me and I feel that interning for me is basically out of the question. I know that you are gaining experience but you essentially are doing a 'job' so surely that should be paid even if it's the absolute minimum. Anyway I think the main point is the way that you've been treated. I didn't see who tweeted the tweet but regardless of if they're a 'big' or 'new' blogger you shouldn't say stuff like that! Especially if you work for a brand as it's not very professional. But I get from the tweet they're making out that you don't agree with interning and that's why you work at Mcdonalds and that is so INACCURATE. From following you on twitter for months I know how many times you've been interning and there gets to a point when you just can't do it any more. Yes you work at Mcdonalds and so what? It's a job, it's money and I admire you for that much more than you sitting at home doing nothing or just living off your parents. I'm pretty sure that you will land your dream job one of these days but no one should be better than anyone else. That's not how the world works and it angers me that the blogging world is turning a bit like this, it shouldn't matter if you have 1, 1000 or 10,000 followers. Glossybox should apologise as it's the right thing to do. Try to take no notice and remember you have a lot of people behind you. x
ReplyDeleteA lesson on how to alienate you customers and break the law at the same time - smooth Glossybox, smooth. xx
ReplyDeleteAm so against unpaid internships in the beauty industry I cannot tell you. You are right.. it is illegal but more than that it is discriminatory. Those who can't afford to work for free can't ever take the opportunity up no matter what talents they might have to bring to the brand. If there is one thing the beauty industry would truly benefit from it is a much broader range of people from all social and economic groups. If brands don't pay, they limit themselves to picking from a very small pool of people.. they're the losers here. And as for working at McDonalds, it is far more important that you work than where you work. Finally, if you tweet for a brand you are a brand ambassador and first rule is that you never get into any kind of Twitter spat for the world to see. I have never featured Glossybox purely because I was completely bombarded press wise and social media wise til I never wanted to hear that word again! Anyway, it won't be long until brands cotton on to this 'try-me size' world and produce their own, that you can actually choose yourself. Better. I hope you are able to find an internship soon.
ReplyDeleteI unsubscribed from Glossybox around March time as I see it as nothing other than a joke now. Everything about the company is appalling, from the differences made between boxes, the customer service (or lack of rather), and how they treat people on Twitter. So shocked that another blogger would make comments like that but whatever makes them feel a bit better about themselves eh.
ReplyDeleteIf I was you I wouldnt let it go.

ReplyDeleteSo pleased you posted this. For somebody working on behalf of the company to make such a disgusting comment is appalling. If glossybox don't take some sort of action in relation to that bullying remark, they're clearly a shoddy company but also surely heading for failure- to associate your business with somebody too incompetent to represent you in a professional manner is hardly a good move. Especially when this person is apparently a marketing 'professional'. If I did anything similar, I would almost certainly not have a job.
ReplyDeleteAnd with regards to the comment itself, absolutely disgusting and just shows how some people are so ignorant. Honestly can't believe you haven't had an apology yet from either! Here's hoping people start unsubscribing to the overpriced monthly box of shite and they go under as they fully deserve. xxx
Hi Lucy,
ReplyDeleteI work in the industry with brands that feature on GB. This is totally unacceptable and I will be advising them to think long and hard in future.
Unacceptable.
And: I would hire someone who had multi-tasked in the service industry via McDonalds over most. Seriously. Keep on keeping on love.
Damn right! In this recession where jobs are few and far between, companies are absolutely taking advantage of graduates! I've seen ads for 1 year internships expenses only!! How on EARTH do they expect someone to live? Unless they're fortunate enough that daddy can support them...this is why I think this country is tits-up, and why the rich get richer whilst the poorer folk miss out on opportunities and have to do what they can to scrape by. And God forbid you should live outside London! There's no hope for you then! Don't even get me started on people who get internships/jobs through nepotism....it boils my blood!
ReplyDeleteThat's why I'm working a shitty job now, just to SAVE enough to do internships for a while next year.
I'm glad you've brought this up for debate...it needs to be spoken about!!
Wow that is just disgusting customer service. As regards to internships, how can they expect someone to survive on an internship for 3 months or more UNPAID? people have bills to pay, travel, and surely want money for themselves. It's something that worries me as I graduate in a years time, and I honestly don't want to be working for that long without being paid. Also I hate how people make comments such as 'O at least I don't work at Mcdonalds' etc. I actually work at Mcdonalds, and have done for the last 4 years as I've been a student, and I hate how people can use it to look down on me just because I work there. It's actually a fairly decent job, and well it pays me for my hard work unlike internships seem to, so I'd say it's actually a lot better job than doing an internship in regards to pay etc. I've heard bad things about Glossybox recently but this is one of the worst things I've heard!
ReplyDeleteI think 3 month unpaid internships have become the norm (sadly) and they do count as legal. If you can afford them I'm sure they are a great way to gain experience. What angers me about them is that they create a rich/poor divide between those who can and cannot afford to work unpaid in London! Or whom live too far away (though I have done a daily 2.5 hour both way commute). To be fair to Glossy I don't think 3 months is really that bad, that *would* be a really good opportunity for somebody. It's the year plus ones that wind me up! Or now where the intern pays the company (I joke not!)
ReplyDeleteIs it possible that You Know Who didn't make the McDonald's jibe directly at you? That it was meant as a generic statement in defence of internships that was unfortunately true? It was without doubt very silly (nothing wrong at all with McDonalds!) but it would seem stupid of her to deliberately attack an individual so publicly!
Sad story :( you absolutely deserve an apology and Glossy need to reconnect with their angry customers!
Thanks so much for posting this, I'd seen some comments on Twitter and on other blogs and couldn't believe how rude Glossybox have been to some people. They're completely unprofessional and out of order with the way they treat people.
ReplyDeleteUnpaid internships are something of a grey area. I do hope more people will challenge them, but sadly they seem to be a normal 'foot in the door' for many young people and something I completely disagree with.
Really hope you don't mind me posting this link, but I feel you should check out Boycott Workfare - http://www.boycottworkfare.org/ - they are challenging a lot of the Government's new work schemes which are forcing people to work illegally below the minimum wage or for free. There may be some info on their site about internships too which you may find interesting xx
You raised a very valid concern and to have someone who is supposed to be representing their company be not only so unprofessional but also bitchy and personal is awful. I used to follow this persons blog but have unfollowed since finding out who it was. I really hope you get the apology you deserve.
ReplyDeleteBravo Lucy! I completely agree with you about their customer service and am so sorry that you had to be subjected to someone so petty and horrible!
ReplyDeleteI have been a subscriber from GB since the beginning, I have run a feature called The Battle of the Beauty Boxes on my blogs for the past 10 months too, give a completely unbiased (as I pay for every subscription myself...even when I was subbed to 8 boxes I paid for each one every month!) review of the products. I have contacted GB on severally occasions to see if I could get a copy of a press release or to ask them a few more q's about the box and have always been ignored. Maybe it's because they can't 'buy' my reviews or loyalty but either way it is unprofessional and a poor show for such a big company!!
xxx
This is absolutely disgusting treatment. I do the Twitter for the firm that I work in and I would be marched out of the door if I made a comment like this! GlossyBox seriously need to consider whether this 'well known' blogger should still be in her job.
ReplyDeleteThis kind of put me off blogging and Twitter when I first read it, then I thought about it and realised that it is only a few of the little clique of big bloggers that think like this. The rest of us work normal jobs, do what we have to to survive and do not look down on and belittle people, let alone publicly insult them!
Out of order
xx
I saw the tweet she wrote and wondered what it was about, it was a very stuck up comment to make and now I know what it was about it's just damn right rude, who does she think she is? I hope you have also made an official complaint about her or at least have brought it to Glossybox's attention.
ReplyDeleteBehind you 200% on this one!
ReplyDeleteFor anyone interested in a campaign against unpaid internships, google 'Intern Aware'.
you go girl!
ReplyDeleteugh how unprofessional of them! Good for you for saying something x
ReplyDeleteI've just come across this post and I'm really shocked I would never sub to Glossybox after this. I work little part time jobs just to get by at college and now uni. It's tough out there and if you can earn yourself some extra cash even if it isn't your dream job then why the heck shouldn't you?! I'm glad you spoke out about this it's awful and good on you xxx
ReplyDeleteHi Lucy,
ReplyDeleteI just found your blog through Tattooed Tealady (love her!) and firstly, you've definitely gained a new follower here, but I was thinking of trying out a beauty box or two and GlossyBox was definitely one I was considering, but this is absolutely disgusting.
I will certainly not ever be subscribing to their service, for a start the products don't seem to live up to what it markets itself on, not to mention the horrible and downright unproffesional service.
So what if you work at McDonalds? At least you work, it pays the bills and I'm sure you're a very capable, hard working young woman, regardless of where you work, be it a fast food chain or Vogue, it doesn't make you any less of a person and I think it's appalling to see what this "popular" beauty blogger is like. Snobby and mean.
Plus, at least you work legally, and your questions were perfectly reasonable.
I hope GB apologise to you and realise their mistake, either way I'll never be going anywhere near them.
Glad I found your blog, keep it up lovely :)
Feel free to check mine out if you feel like it, no obligations of course, have a lovely day xxxx
I remember seeing all of this on Twitter. Glossybox are truly appauling, I was with them from their very first box and have seen them cower away over time - Their service is incredibly amateur and cowardly, I seriously think I could do better at their business than them, ha! Shame really, because its a great concept but just doesn't work with them.
ReplyDeleteWhat happened to you on twitter was absolutely disgusting and downright snidey - I remember it all happening and its disgusting that they're just giving you the shoulder - I can't believe they still have so many ambassadors after all of this, who wants to be affiliated with such a scammy brand? Yes. Scammy. Because they charge £12 for a box of crap, really. Its crap that we could all pick up for free in Debenhams or elsewhere! x
Oh Luce, I feel so mad. I think I know the blogger you mean too, if so what a right bitch! How dare she judge you! So amazingly un-professional, quite glad I never paid for a box and am not alone in thinking it is shit. xxx
ReplyDeleteI wish someone would just tell us who this person is so I can unfollow her! Don't really wana be supporting a blog when the person has been so clearly unprofessional and rude!
ReplyDeletex
wow, I saw this tweet from her and didnt realise what it was about, I am shocked. but go you for standing up for this! xx
ReplyDeletewho is this blogger? x
Deletelily pebbles :(
DeleteI feel a little mixed about this. Whilst there's no arguing that tweeting that comment was completely inappropriate and unprofessional of an ambassador, and this is all pretty poor form from Glossybox - I get what she means with her generalisation of 'McDonalds' employees.
ReplyDeleteI used to work for McDonalds myself, and there is a huge stigma attached to their employees in that they are assumed to me lazy, uneducated and unintelligent because of my job. This used to annoy the hell out of me - but I did meet some (now former) colleagues that were exactly that and only worked there because they were too lazy to do anything else with their lives. As a fairly ambitious person - it took me a long time to understand/accept this. But anyway - my point being - this certain ambassador may just be sadly very ignorant and 'uneducated' herself. Sometimes we're just working a 'for now' job and do have bigger and better plans for our futures.
I TOTALLY agree with you about unpaid internships however. I don't understand how people get away asking for someone to come and work for free. I don't live anywhere near London - and am already worried about how I'm going to get a foot in the door after University because of this. When I once complained to someone about how I would never be able to do an internship because of this, they said: "Well some people will do them anyway, because it's not all about the money for them and they actually care about their career." I mean - wow. The fact that people still think that drives me mental, and this whole situation to me, is just another example of this warped point of view.
Your first or current job doesn't matter - it's your last job that counts. Companies are also cheating themselves out of some really talented interns by not understanding that we don't all live in bloody London!
Hi Lucy,
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to say that I am really impressed by your strength and determination in this issue.
As a company director, I would hire you after reading this post alone. You have demonstrated that you can form your own opinions based upon the facts, and that you are willing to stick with what you know is right, even when doing so is not easy. Graduates are ten a penny. Strong, free thinking individuals like you are not.
I never took an unpaid internship myself and I do not offer them at my company. We receive many requests for unpaid internships and they are all told the same thing; I have no time to nanny those without valuable skill, and I will always pay those who have skills of value.
Don't lose heart. You have gained a valuable experience from this. People to laugh at when you far outstrip their success! I know that a strong candidate like you will find the perfect position soon, and that the lucky company will gladly pay you for your contribution.
I would suggest that those who try to put you down only do so out of jealousy. Most people do not start out so valuable as you.
Good luck x
Thank you so much for this comment, it's restored my faith so much.
DeleteI know a lot of people are bored of hearing about, bored me harping on about it on Twitter, and like I keep saying, I'm bored of it. Out of pure principle alone I'm not going to let it drop, It's not fair on me or the other people who have been let down my Glossybox on more than one occasion.
I have interned, I know what it's like to work without being paid but thankfully they've all been within the law and the companies have all been within their rights. I've been invited back to work on a 'freelance' basis for a company that I once interned at, they wanted to pay me instead of seeking somebody who would work for them unpaid.
But, honestly, thank you again - what you've said means a lot and fingers crossed I'll find a 'proper' job soon! x
I think I must have had my head in the clouds because I didn't know about this until now. Having read the blog post, I am absolutely disgusted at the way you've been treated; no-one should ever be judged in the manner that you were. You on the other hand have remained dignified and professional and I commend you highly for this.
ReplyDeletex
There is no such thing as a 'proper' job. A job is a job and a wage is a wage regardless of how low or high it may be. At least you can hold your head high and say you made your money while getting to where you want to be instead of having the taxpayers pay your way. I think you're pretty awesome!
ReplyDeleteThank you thank you for posting about your experiences, I was starting to feel like I was the only one frustrated at being treated as disposable by companies using illegal loop holes for what feels like slave labour.
ReplyDeleteAll of my friends have had to intern, all of them ended up moving to London on borrowed money as they couldnt sleep on peoples sofas or commute hours on the train anymore. 'Gaining valuable experience' is coming at the cost of parents eating into their savings to support us.
http://life-of-a-london-intern.blogspot.co.uk/
Really glad that an issue like this is bringing to life the attitudes reflected in current job roles for graduates or students. I work in an "entry level" job and enjoy coming home knowing I've earned more than a wage; I've earned self-respect and humbling friendships.
ReplyDeleteIt's a shame that a lot of people seem to no longer value that. I've done four internships; and not even moved up a level.
It's this kind of situation that just kills the sort of enthusiasm that my peers and myself used to have for a subject that used to be a passion. Why should we bother to fight for something when the people who have never tried are just beginning to lap us and the people who got lucky are spitting in our faces?
To be honest if anything comes from this then it should be pride for being grounded still. And I'm sure there's a good quote for that...
"Fortune brings in some boats that are not steered." - William Shakespeare.
I think that says more than enough about people who forget where they came from.
Have you guys checked out LuxBox? www.luxbox.co.uk... They have a Twitter too @Lux_Box. You may just like their customer service better!!! xxx
ReplyDeleteI can't believe how badly they treated you, it's disgusting. You should consider, if you can be bothered going to the hassle, of reporting them to the police or council, whoever is in charge of employment law. Since they're openly ignoring it. There's no excuse for the way they've treated you, it's not on. I'm glad I left them when I did all those months ago, when I realised I could get all those samples for free by walking into Debenhams or somewhere like that... utter tripe! I've switched to SheSaid now, much prefer them - I just can't believe how rude GlossyBox were - wish I knew who this 'well respected blogger' is that looks after their twitter.
ReplyDeletehey. completely understand your anger, but just so you know, in the charity world every single internship is unpaid. i am currently on a 3 month internship with a very well known charity and it's the total norm to be unpaid and just be paid expenses. completely understand your frustration, but this is not a new thing and internships are often an amazing experience that puts your foot in the door of some industries. mine is mind-blowingly good and i wouldnt be able to apply for most/all charity jobs without it. stick with it! x
